U.S. burden of Alzheimer’s disease, related dementias to double by 2060 (opens new window)
Among people ages 65 and older, African Americans have the highest prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (13.8 percent), followed by Hispanics (12.2 percent), and non-Hispanic whites (10.3 percent), American Indian and Alaska Natives (9.1 percent), and Asian and Pacific Islanders (8.4 percent). By 2060, the researchers estimate there will be 3.2 million Hispanics and 2.2 million African Americans with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. The increases are a result of fewer people dying from other chronic diseases and surviving into older adulthood when the risk for Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias increases. Latino Chicagoans’ Life Expectancy Has Dropped 7 Years Since 2012 — The Steepest Decline In The City (opens new window)
In 2012, the life expectancy for Latino residents was 83.1 years; but that’s fallen to 75.9 years as of 2020. This has been fueled by barriers to health care, living in food deserts and dealing with stress and instability, experts said. Read more (opens new window)
Health disparities drive Ute Mountain Ute plan for new grocery store, workforce center (opens new window)
To help reduce high rates of diabetes and obesity, tribe leaders are working to raise $12 million by 2024 to help build the new community enterprise. In Towaoc, capital of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, there are about 347 households and no place within 15 miles to shop for fresh, healthy food. Read more (opens new window)
