Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.

MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE USE, AND NURSING ARTICLES
Anxiety, grief, anger, fear, helplessness. The emotional toll of climate change is broad-ranging, especially for young people. Many worry about what the future holds, and a daily grind of climate anxiety and distress can lead to sleeplessness, an inability to focus and worse. Some young people wonder whether it’s moral to bring children into the world. Many people grieve for the natural world. Read more (opens new window)
Researchers found children with highly addictive use of phones, video games or social media were two to three times as likely to have thoughts of suicide or to harm themselves. As Americans scramble to respond to rising rates of suicidal behavior among youth, many policymakers have locked in on an alarming metric: the number of hours a day that American children spend glued to a glowing screen. Compass Pathways plc (Nasdaq: CMPS), a biotechnology company dedicated to accelerating patient access to evidence-based innovation, announced today the successful achievement of the primary endpoint in the ongoing Phase 3 COMP005 trial, the first of two Phase 3 trials evaluating COMP360, a synthetic, proprietary formulation of psilocybin, for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). The primary endpoint is the difference in change from baseline in the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) scores between the active treatment group and the placebo group at week 6. Mental health questions that drove physicians to suicide (opens new window)
For decades, the health care system has operated under the cruel irony that the people dedicated to healing others were being punished for seeking healing themselves. Doctors, nurses, and health care workers have been forced to choose between getting mental health treatment and keeping their careers, creating a toxic culture where the people we depend on for our health were suffering in silence. It's before sunrise on a Saturday and a small group has gathered at Socialite Bar in on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s capital. Instead of nursing hangovers, they sit with eyes closed and bodies in meditative poses on the bare floor. It’s an unlikely setting for a yoga class. In Zimbabwe, the practice is rare and mostly found in the wealthy suburbs. Yet it is quietly taking root here in a beer tavern in Chitungwiza, a low-income town 30 kilometers (18 miles) outside the capital, Harare. Read more (opens new window)
MFP/ANA ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPCOMING EVENTS
The MFP/ANA's 2025 Intensive Training Institute (ITI) is happening August 13–17.
This year's theme: Innovating Psychiatric Nursing – Advancing Mental Health and Substance Use Care for Children and Families Through Leadership.

Congratulations to MFP alum Dr. Eugenia Millender who has been inducted as a Fellow into the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP) Dr. Millender writes: " Honored. Humbled. Grateful. ✨ I have been inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP)! This recognition is a milestone in my journey as a psychiatric and mental health nurse practitioner, and I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to stand among such inspiring nurse leaders from across the nation such as Gabrielle P Abelard DNP, APRN-BC, FAAN, FNAP, Umeika Griffith-Stephens and Stephen A. Ferrara, DNP, FAAN.
The FAANP program recognizes nurse practitioners who have made outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, education, and health policy. I’m deeply grateful to my two incredible sponsors, Tari Dilks and Jeffrey Ramirez, whose support has meant so much. It was an honor to serve alongside you both on the Board of Directors of American Psychiatric Nurses Association. Your support means the world.
Congratulations to Dr. Freida Outlaw, MFP alum and former Academic Consultant/Director who received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Berea College. Dr. Outlaw writes: On June 14th I received the Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor the college bestows on an Alumni for their body of work that exemplifies the Colleges motto ”God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.”
Congratulations to MFP Alum Dr. Nia Josiah on her recently published article in the Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities: "Neighborhood Deprivation, Trauma Profiles, Coping, and Stress Prospectively Predict Depressive Symptoms Among Young African American Mothers in the InterGEN Study: A Latent Class Analysis." Dr. Josiah writes, "This longitudinal study reveals how trauma exposure, chronic stress, and maladaptive coping—particularly avoidance—prospectively shape depressive symptoms over time.
One of the most powerful takeaways? Even in the context of structural racism and neighborhood deprivation, stress consistently emerged as the strongest predictor of poor mental health outcomes. As a DNP and practice track faculty member, being invited to contribute to this work moves the needle on what engagement in research can and should look like for those of us grounded in clinical scholarship. I see this as an important step toward broader inclusion of DNP voices across institutions and projects like this one." Read the full article here: Click Here (opens new window)
