NYC hatches new 'clubhouses' for people with serious mental illness (opens new window)
Robert Zhou, 26, arrived in New York City from the Bay Area a few months ago filled with concerns about his ability to adjust socially and find a job. “ It's definitely overwhelming for someone who has a mental illness,” Zhou said. But on a recent afternoon, Zhou seemed right at home in the common room of a clubhouse called Elements House that opened near the border of Chinatown and the Lower East Side in January, which he says has softened his landing into the city. It’s one of about a dozen clubhouses for people with serious mental illnesses that are opening or expanding across the five boroughs, aided by millions of dollars in new funding from the city health department. Reimagining Mental Health: Dr. Shaquita Starks on Caregiving, Community & the Spiritual Foundation
In this episode of Mental Health Trailblazers: Psychiatric Nurses Speak Up, host Indrias Kassaye sits down with Dr. Shaquita ‘Hanifa Matuko’ Starks—a nurse practitioner, educator, MFP/ANA alumna, and spiritual minister who’s challenging the way we think about mental health care. Drawing from her clinical practice, research, and life experience, Dr. Starks offers a grounded and deeply human perspective on what it takes to truly support people who are navigating stress, trauma, and the everyday weight of caregiving—especially in communities where support can be hard to come by, and mental health struggles are often carried in silence.
