Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) nurses face a history of underrepresentation in all aspects of the nursing profession. In a 2019 Federal Workforce Analysis of 50,273 registered nurses, data show White, non-Hispanic nurses continue to dominate the nursing workforce, at 73.3%, leaving 10.2% of nurses identifying as Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish; 7.8% identifying as Black, non-Hispanic; 5.2% identifying as Asian; 1.7% as multiple races; 1.0% as other; 0.6% as Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander; and 0.3% as American Indian or Alaska Native (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2019). This Mental Health Awareness Month, which is also Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), is announcing a nearly $3.5 million five-year grant opportunity to develop a Center of Excellence, advancing behavioral health care for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities while reducing behavioral health-related disparities. Overwhelmed health departments are hard-pressed to spend Covid cash for underserved (opens new window)
A year later — with covid having killed 1 million people in the U.S. since the start of the pandemic and hospitalizing millions more — little of the money has been used, according to KHN requests for information from about a dozen state and county agencies' grants. The persistent lack of diversity among participants in clinical trials is a critical issue that is harming both populations that have long been left out of pivotal medical studies and the entire biomedical research enterprise, according to the authors of a report released Tuesday by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine. Current master's Fellow Pak Chau and our host Indrias Kassaye. highlight the importance of culture, community, and alternative treatment options in the mental health field. Pak is enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing and is slated to graduate in July of 2022. He is interested in using technology to bridge gaps in care, identifying public health inequities, and providing culturally and linguistically appropriate psychiatric care to minority populations.
