Chantel Vazquez, BSN, RN, is a second-year Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) student at the University of North Dakota (UND) College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines. Her journey in nursing began at UND, where she earned her undergraduate degree.
Since then, she has gained diverse experience, working in Indian Health Services and Tribal health centers, the Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care system, and local government agencies. This experience has equipped her with a deep understanding of the healthcare system and a wide range of skills. She is an enrolled member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa from Belcourt, ND, and is currently working as a nurse mentor for the retention/recruitment of American Indians into the Nursing (RAIN) program at UND. In this role, Chantel assists American Indian students toward becoming registered nurses, enabling them to use their unique perspectives and knowledge to provide holistic care in Tribal communities. She participates in cultural events in her tribal community and enjoys traveling with her family. Chantel is passionate about working with patients who are dealing with mental health and substance use disorders, which drives her desire to become a provider, and she hopes to work in a tribal community after graduation. In her spare time, Chantel enjoys lifting weights, jogging, and spending quality time with her husband and three children.
