If my mind can conceive it, if my heart can believe it, then I can achieve it.

There is growing recognition in the fields of public health and mental health services research that the provision of clinical services to individuals is not a viable approach to meeting the mental health needs of a population. Despite enthusiasm for the notion of population-based approaches to mental health, concrete guidance about what such approaches entail is lacking, and evidence of their effectiveness has not been integrated. MFP/ANA ANNOUNCEMENTS & UPCOMING EVENTS

I’m honored and grateful to receive the Midwest Nursing Research Society (opens new window) Nursing Education RIIG Dissertation Award for my study on the implementation of BSN programs in Illinois community colleges.
My mixed-methods study focused on the voices of ADN nursing faculty. What emerged was a powerful dual narrative! Nursing faculty expressed a shared belief in the value of BSN education in community colleges in Illinois while also pointing to the practical barriers to making it work. They highlighted the need for adequate resources, community driven education for students, sustainable faculty workloads, support for the accreditation process, and time for maintaining the nursing curriculum and student support. Without addressing these challenges first, implementing BSN programs in community college settings remains a significant challenge in Illinois.
Their insights weren’t rooted in resistance—they reflected the real-world conditions of academia. The findings underscore the need to align nursing education reform with institutional readiness, capacity, and meaningful support.
The results of my research is already informing my future work. In the next few years, I hope to implement the following initiatives:
• A nursing faculty development program
• A longitudinal study following nursing students (I’m looking for collaboration!)
• Community-based efforts focused on social determinants of health with nursing faculty as leaders
As I learn more and push more for nursing education policy reform, I see how critical it is to support both faculty and new graduates throughout the education-to-practice journey. Strengthening policies and practices are key to building a resilient nursing workforce.
I also want to thank you to a wonderful mentor and nominator for this award Dr. Dr. Debra Gurney (opens new window)!
