MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC , Masters (Alumni) Doctoral (Current)
Jolie S. Jemmott, MSN, RN, PMHNP-BC is a second-year PhD student at Duke University School of Nursing in Durham, North Carolina. Before her time at Duke, she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2019 from Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, followed by her Master of Science in Nursing in 2022 from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Over the past six years, Jolie has gained valuable experience as a nurse, specializing in both colorectal care and psychiatry. For the last two years, she has worked as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner in community mental health, focusing on adult outpatient services. Jolie is deeply committed to supporting marginalized and vulnerable populations facing mental health challenges.
Her decision to pursue a career as a nurse scientist stems from her desire to understand the barriers, attitudes, and beliefs affecting Black men’s engagement in seeking opioid use treatment. She aims to explore past opioid treatment-seeking behaviors among Black men and identify the behavioral beliefs, normative beliefs, control beliefs, and intentions of Black men’s opioid-seeking behaviors. Jolie's primary goal in her doctoral studies is to become a professor at a research-intensive university and to establish a research program dedicated to improving mental health and health equity for substance-abusing populations. Through her research, she aspires to advance nursing knowledge and contribute meaningfully to the health of underrepresented and marginalized communities.
