As a dual-certified Family and Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Umeika Stephens’ key focus is on the provision of holistic patient-centered mental health care. With over two decades of experience in mental health treatment, psychopharmacologic management and counseling, she is sensitive to the healthcare needs in the local community and the impact on those communities when patients have access to culturally sensitive services.
She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Michigan—Ann Arbor. She then went on completed her Master of Science in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Michigan State University. After finding her love in mental health, she completed her graduate certificate as family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at Rush University in Chicago, Illinois. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan in addition to a Graduate Certificate in Nursing Education.
She has received numerous grants from HRSA and SAMHSA focused on improving access to care for mental health patients, integrated behavioral health, advancing graduate nursing education, and SBIRT. She has provided SBIRT and mental health first aid trainings for inter-professional groups across the state. It is through her work on this grant that she grown her passion for helping providers develop clinical knowledge related to working with patients living with addiction. Through her professional affiliations, she continues to strengthen both her professional and personal networks. She proudly serves as a member of the American Nurses Association, the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the Association of Black Nursing Faculty, Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, and Minority Advanced Practice Nurses Network. As a complement to her educational and professional experience, Dr. Stephens also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor and Graduate Specialty Coordinator at Wayne State University, where she oversees the psychiatric nurse practitioner program. Through her passion for the community and quality healthcare, Dr. Stephens strives to help people heal in mind, body and soul so they can live lives of wholeness and completion. She is the co-author of an urban health textbook entitled “Urban Health: Practical Application to Clinical Based Learning” published November 2022 with her colleagues, Drs. Cynthera McNeill and Tara Walker.
