Dr. Christopher Lance Coleman, Dean & Professor at Oakland University School of Nursing, Rochester MI, is set to receive the 2024 National Black Nurses Association "Trailblazer Award."
Dr. Christopher Lance Coleman, Dean & Professor at Oakland University School of Nursing, Rochester MI, is set to receive the 2024 National Black Nurses Association "Trailblazer Award." This prestigious accolade recognizes his outstanding leadership and willingness to take risks in various fields, including nursing, business, philanthropy, communications, government, education, and the arts. The award ceremony will take place on Saturday, July 27, 2024, during the President's Gala in San Francisco, CA, as part of the 52nd Institute and Conference.
Dr. Bridgette M. Rice is the Associate Dean for Research and Innovation, and the Richard and Marianne Kreider Endowed Professor in Nursing for Vulnerable Populations, in the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing at Villanova University.
She holds degrees from Villanova University (BSN ‘03), the University of Pennsylvania (MSN ‘05, PhD ‘09) and Palmer Theological Seminary of Eastern University (MDiv ‘17). Dr. Rice began her nursing career in neonatal intensive care at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She has since expanded her work to community-based practice, with her extensive program of research done in partnership with affected communities.
Her findings have been applied to address multiple health inequities (e.g., youth mental health service utilization, cardiovascular disease risk among young Black men, gun violence). She uses novel approaches including mixed methods research and GIS mapping. Aware of the role of geography in health, her spatially-based research seeks to better understand and intervene in factors such as neighborhood disadvantage to prevent disease and promote health equity.
Dr. Rice is a staunch justice advocate who believes that research can be leveraged as an advocacy tool to ensure all individuals have an opportunity to achieve their full health potential. Her work has been featured through multiple media outlets, and she has received numerous honors and awards, including the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research Protégée Award in 2015, the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses Diversity and Equity Award in 2020 and induction as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2022.
Project ECHO® on Racism in Nursing is being conducted as part of the ongoing work of the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing, a multi-organizational collaborative of leading nursing organizations to examine the issue of racism within nursing nationwide and the impact on nurses, patients, communities, and healthcare systems to motivate all nurses to confront systemic racism.
Join us as we explore the root causes of health inequities and discuss the concepts and strategies for taking action toward health equity in everyday practice. 1.5 CNE is available for each session of the series.

Administration for Community Living's National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (opens new window) (NIDILRR) is announcing a new funding opportunity for the Switzer Research Fellowship Program (opens new window).
The purpose of the Switzer Research Fellowship Program is to build research capacity by providing support to highly qualified individuals, including individuals with disabilities, to conduct research on rehabilitation, independent living, and other experiences and outcomes of people with disabilities.
The purpose of the Merit Switzer Research Fellowships for Doctoral Dissertation Research (opens new window) is to support doctoral candidates as they conduct their dissertation research focused on a disability or rehabilitation topic that addresses outcomes among people with disabilities in one or more of NIDILRR’s outcome domains: community living and participation, employment, or health and function.
NIDILRR plans to make five fellowship awards under this opportunity. Applicants must demonstrate their formal academic status as doctoral candidates and have approval of dissertation proposal. Fellowship awards will have one 12-month project period.

- Minority AIDS Initiative: Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Prevention and Treatment Pilot Program (opens new window)

The purpose of this program is to provide substance use prevention, substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, HIV, and viral hepatitis prevention and treatment services for racial and ethnic individuals vulnerable to a SUD and/or mental health condition, HIV, viral hepatitis, and other infectious disease (e.g., sexually transmitted infections). Recipients will be expected to take a syndemic approach to SUD, HIV, and viral hepatitis by providing SUD prevention and treatment to racial and ethnic individuals at risk for or living with HIV.
Anticipated Total Available Funding: $5,700,000

The purpose of this program is to advance the provision of trauma-informed, culturally relevant, and evidence-based substance use-related approaches and interventions across the country and across the lifespan to reduce the impacts of opioid and stimulant misuse and use disorders on individuals, families, and communities.

The American Academy of Nursing (Academy) is now accepting abstracts for the 2024 Health Policy Conference: Courageous Transformations Towards an Equitable Future Conference to be held October 31 - November 2, 2024 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, DC.
The deadline to submit an abstract is June 7, 2024.
