S. Akeya Harrold, DNP, RN, PMHNP, APRN-BC, graduated in 2016 with her DNP from Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
Dr. Harrold is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. Her research focuses on improving the health, wellness, and quality of life for veterans with severe mental illness. In her 15 years in Nursing, Dr. Harrold has worked as a registered nurse in the intensive care unit (ICU), the emergency room (ER), behavioral medicine units and as director of nursing at the South Carolina Department of Mental Health. She currently provides care to veterans suffering with severe mental illness and co-occurring substance use disorders in the Mental Health Intensive Case Management Program at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, in South Carolina. Dr. Harrold is currently the Director of the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency Program at the Ralph H. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
Dr. Harrold received her Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from Central Carolina Technical College; BSN from the University of South Carolina Upstate, and a Masters’ in Nursing (MSN) from the Medical University of South Carolina. She models education, commitment, and mentorship by serving on committees at the VA, mentoring nursing students and volunteering abroad through missions and in her community to include faith-based education that raises awareness, acceptance and decreasing the stigma of mental illness. Moreover, Dr. Harrold is an active member of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, the American Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau International.
