Dr. Lillian Tom-Orme is an outstanding professional who has made contributions to the nursing profession for almost three decades. Her many honors attest to her commitment to improving the overall well being of all people, but she has made specific offerings to the American Indian and Native Alaskan committees. Examples of her professional contributions and recognitions include:
- American Diabetes Association Reaching People Award;
- National Impact Award;
- National Indian Health Board;
- Research Fellow, University of Pennsylvania;
- National Institutes of Health/National Cancer Institute Award of Merit;
- American Academy of Nursing Fellow;
- University of Utah Young Alumni Par Excellence Award; and
- 1989 Utah Department of Health Employee Incentive Award.
Dr. Tom-Orme is President, National Alaskan Native American Indian Nurses Association (NANAINA).
Her research interests are broad and varied, but center on health and mental health beliefs, behaviors, and outcomes among American Indian people. She does research on diabetes, breast and cervical cancer, health policy and health systems issues, and she employs qualitative and quantitative research methods in her investigative approaches. Her research support is expansive, and again, the focus is on health outcomes and lifestyle-related behaviors.
Dr. Tom-Orme's excellence in research is known throughout the nation and her professional talents are often sought by state and national health focused organizations. Moreover, she serves as a member of the NIH scientific review panels, committing her time and expertise to scientific reviews that address ethnic/minority populations. She participates with the Agency for Health Care Research on Minority Health. Moreover, she is a member of the Panel of Experts, Office of Women's Health, Public Health Service, and the Department of Health and Human Services. She is a member of the Institutional Review Board, Indian Health Service, and the Office of Research.
