Kim Ann Kim, MSN, RN, CDCES is currently a second-year student in the Doctor of Nursing Practice/Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (DNP/PMHNP) program at the University of Saint Joseph in West Hartford, CT. She is exploring the phenomenon of diabetes distress and its impact on Black and Latino male adults living in the United States.
Ms. Kim was born to a Cuban American family in Connecticut where she learned about the challenges her community faced migrating and the pressure to assimilate. The stories she heard have fueled her aspirations to improve care delivery for the underserved and embrace culture as a strength. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Saint Joseph, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Sacred Heart University.
She is a Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES), and her clinical practice focuses on diabetes prevention, treatment, and education for persons living with diabetes. She is a member of DNPs of Color, Society of LatinX Nurses, National Association of Hispanic Nurses - Hartford Chapter, and the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists. Kim has experience in acute care, in-patient diabetes management, and diabetes self-management education. She advocates for nursing students' mental wellness and belonging, having served as faculty, clinical instructor, academic advisor, and mentor. Ms. Kim is passionate about addressing racism in nursing and was featured in the Reckoning with Racism in Nursing mini documentary Caring Against the Grain. She is an appointed commissioner of the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing. She is a contributing author of Latinas in Nursing and participated in the filming of "Everybody's Work - Healing What Hurts Us All", a documentary by Chad Tingle and SHIFT.
