Iris Mayoral

Iris Mayoral, MSN, PMHNP-BC, is currently a Psychiatric-Mental Health Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at Duke University. Through her DNP project, she is eager to improve access to mental health care services for underserved minority populations, especially via the adoption of integrated behavioral health models. 

As a bilingual, Spanish-speaking board-certified psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP)in Los Angeles and daughter of immigrants from Oaxaca, Mexico, Ms. Mayoral is passionate about providing quality mental health care to individuals of ethnic-racial minorities. She has eight years of experience as a psychiatric-mental health RN at UCLA's Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital. After completing her PMHNP Program at Duke University in 2024, she transitioned to the role of PMHNP at the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Organ Transplant Center.

Beyond the hospital setting, Ms. Mayoral has been an active member of the American Psychiatric Nursing Association (APNA) since she was selected as a 2014 APNA Board of Directors Scholar. In 2020, she presented a poster at the APNA Virtual Conference on a proactive toileting program she developed, led and incorporated into a geriatric-medical psychiatric units fall prevention bundle. The 2024 APNA Conference featured Ms. Mayoral's poster on a hand-off communication tool she developed and implemented that was associated with improvements in patient satisfaction scores and several clinical indicators on a geriatric-medical psychiatric unit. The tool promotes the delivery of recovery-based mental health care that takes patients unique cultural backgrounds, language preferences, physical, and cognitive abilities into account. 

In 2023, Ms. Mayoral was recognized by the Simms/Mann Foundation’s Off the Chart program for, "a bias toward action, capacity for self-direction, originality and creative instincts, courageous and bold thinking, and the potential to achieve even more." In 2024, she received the Thelma Ingles Excellence in Clinical Expertise & Scholarly Activities Award from the Beta Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
