Marlene Brennen, DNP, FNP-BC, PMHNP-BC, APRN, is currently in the dissertation phase of her PhD program in nursing at Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, FL. Her research phenomenon of interest is the social determinants of health as it relates to African American pregnant women. Dr. Brennen attended the Summer Genetic Institute (SGI) at the National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR) in 2016. The SGI is a highly competitive, intensive month-long education and laboratory training on genetics and genomics. At the SGI, she gained a critical understanding of genomics, immunology, and the impact of the environment on the immune system. This experience motivated me to pursue a PhD degree so that she could study the relationship of the psychosocial determinant of health, on health outcomes.
She began her nursing career in New York City practicing medical/surgical nursing, and then later pediatric nursing, and practiced as an advanced registered nurse practitioner in primary care. She currently practices psychiatric mental health part-time.
Dr. Brennen received an Associate Degree in nursing from State University of New York (SUNY) in Morrisville, NY, a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from SUC Utica/Rome, a Master of Science degree in Nursing from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree from Florida Atlantic University, in Boca Raton, FL.
She has presented posters and/or podium presentations at the Southern Nursing Research Society, the Renfrew Center conferences, and the Association of Black Nursing Faculty (ABNF). She is an active member of the Florida Nurses Association, and the International Society of Nurses in Genetics.
