The Minority Fellowship Program at the American Nurses Association was awarded the "Now is the Time: Minority Fellowship Program- Youth (NITT-MFP-Y)" grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The NITT-MFP-Y was a component of the President's Plan, "Now is the Time," which was developed to increase access to mental health services for youth in America.

The primary goal of the NITT-MFP-Y was to reduce health disparities, and improve behavioral health care outcomes for racially and ethnically diverse populations by increasing the number of culturally competent master's level behavioral health professionals.  The fellowship focused on the behavioral health care of children, adolescents, and youth transitioning into adulthood (aged 16-25).

As the program continues, the scope has increased to nurses pursuing full-time Masters degrees serving anyone across the life-span.
