Dr. Sandra Dukes, DNP, RN is an accomplished Doctor of Nursing Practice with over twenty years in practice utilizing extended and expanded skills, experience and knowledge in assessment, planning, implementation, diagnosis and evaluation of the care required. A profound education professional who possesses extensive post-graduate education in nursing. Dr. Dukes is board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AACN) as an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist with advanced didactic and clinical education, knowledge, skills, and scope of practice in nursing. She is also certified in Medical-Surgical nursing specifically serving the post- operative patient population.
She is currently employed full-time as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center. Her past nursing experience include five years combine as a nursing instructor at Georgia Perimeter College and Emory University. She has past clinical practice in post-operative pain management, post anesthesia care unit (PACU), and the care of adult patients with mental health disorders. She leads excellence through evidence based practice and continues to improve processes that directly affect patient care. She serves in the role of clinical advisor and preceptor to graduate nursing students at the University of Alabama and Walden University.
She continues personal and professional development in the areas of healthcare that offers continuing challenge, research, and growth opportunities. She is currently enrolled in the Family Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Post-Certificate program at Georgia State University, Atlanta, Georgia. Her primary area of interest will focus on the treatment of patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and dual diagnosis with substance use disorders.
Dr. Dukes holds current membership in the American Nurses Association/ Georgia Nurses Association, American Psychiatric Nurses Association and the Clinical Nurse Specialist Atlanta Affiliate Chapter. She serves as chair of the Atlanta VAMC nurses chapter of GNA. She is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Inc. Past chair positions include Georgia Nurses Association, Elections Committee, 2011, and co-chair of the Nurses Professional Standards Board (NPSB) 2010-2012, BLS Regional Faculty, American Heart Association 2013-2015, chair for the National Nurses Education Incentive (NNEI) committee, co-chair of the Awards Task Force Committee of GNA and secretary of Nurses Professional Standards Board (NPSB).
She is married and enjoys cycling, traveling and making gift-baskets.
